Nvidia Shield updated to v9.2 with Auro-3D, bug fixes

06 Feb 2025 | Rasmus Larsen |

Nvidia is rolling out a new firmware update for the Shield TV media players. It mostly contains bug fixes and enhancements but also adds the long-promised support for Auro-3D audio.

The Nvidia Shield is no longer receiving regular updates, but the mega-corporation has not forgotten about it. After releasing a hotfix in October, Nvidia is now rolling out firmware version 9.2 to all owners.

Auro-3D support

In November 2023, the company promised to bring support for the Auro-3D audio format to Shield but then went completely silent. More than a year later, Nvidia is finally making good on its promise, as Auro-3D support is included in the new firmware that is now rolling out gradually across the world. Check your device to see if you are next in line. Shield will be removed from Google Home integration following the update to version 9.2. Nvidia refers to this support document for reconfiguration.

Stuck in 2020

While it is great to see Nvidia fix well-known and long-standing bugs, the update is not exactly what owners had hoped for. There are still plenty of things that could be added and improved in software, and the hardware has not been upgraded since 2019. For example, Shield is stuck on Android 11 from 2020, and Nvidia has not commented on plans for Android 12 or beyond. Still, the Shield TV remains the most powerful mainstream Android media player; in terms of hardware power it is miles ahead of the new Google TV Streamer, as evidenced by FlatpanelsHD's benchmarks here.
