Samsung's new XR headset may boast higher-res OLED than Apple Vision Pro

06 Mar 2025 | Rasmus Larsen |

Samsung plans to equip its upcoming 'Project Moohan' XR headset with a 1.3-inch micro-OLED display boasting over 3800ppi resolution, according to Korean media.

Micro-OLED, also known as OLED-on-Silicon, integrates OLED directly onto a silicon substrate instead of glass or plastic, marking a potential paradigm shift in the industry.

This manufacturing method enables OLED to achieve significantly higher pixel densities than traditional displays, allowing for ultra-high resolution in compact screens – ideal for VR headsets.

Samsung to use micro-OLED

According to Korean newspaper The Elec, Samsung's upcoming 'Project Moohan' headset will feature micro-OLED, following Apple's introduction of the technology in the Vision Pro. The report claims Samsung's micro-OLED display will measure 1.3 inches with a resolution of 3552×3480, exceeding 3800ppi – higher than the Apple Vision Pro’s approximate 3400ppi. The headset will be powered by the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip and run on Android XR. However, with the Snapdragon chip being significantly less powerful than Apple’s M2, it remains to be seen whether it can consistently drive the high-resolution OLED display. Samsung has yet to confirm any technical details about its headset. Meta uses inferior LCD panels in all of its current Quest headsets.

Who is supplying the display?

The Elec suggests that Sony will supply the micro-OLED display for Samsung's XR headset. Sony already supplies the micro-OLED for Apple Vision Pro. However, we are not entirely convinced that this detail is accurate. At CES 2025, Samsung Display showcased a micro-OLED prototype with the exact same 3552×3480 resolution. FlatpanelsHD observed it in action and reported on it in this article. See the photos below. Samsung is expected to launch its headset in the second half of 2025. Pricing remains unknown.
