The streaming box was supposed to launch in 2025 to compete with Apple TV 4K and Google TV Streamer. However, the whole project has been canceled, according to The Verge.
Rumors have been circulating for a while and in December 2024 Sonos confirmed that they had entered into a collaboration on Ventura OS, a new TV operating system.
Ventura OS is based on Android (AOSP) and is developed by The Trade Desk, a major advertising company.
Sonos pulls the plug
The entire project, which was developed under the codename 'Pinewood', has now been canceled, according to The Verge's sources. The decision was communicated to Sonos employees yesterday.
The streaming box was close to launch and was being tested in beta. However, Sonos' new CEO Tom Conrad, who took over in January 2025 after Patrick Spence, responsible for the problematic launch of the new app, has decided to cancel the project.
According to rumors, Sonos had planned to make the box a hub for wireless sound in the living room and include an HDMI switch, which FlatpanelsHD in February described as a potential recipe for disaster.
Employees have reportedly been told that Sonos' plans to enter the video market have been shelved "for now." The development team has been reassigned to other internal tasks.

Internally, some employees been apparently worried that the product would become a flop similar to the Sonos Ace headphones. Amazon, Apple, Google and Roku are currently leading in streaming boxes.
