Google starts rolling out fix for broken Chromecasts - update

14 Mar 2025 | Rasmus Larsen |

After several days of malfunctioning Chromecasts worldwide, Google has started rolling out a fix to bring them back to life. However, it will not work if you have reset your device.
Update 18.3.2025: Google has now also found a fix for Chromecasts that have been factory reset. You "will need to update your Google Home app to the latest version (3.30.1.6 for Android and 3.30.106 for iOS) to set up your Chromecast (2nd gen) or Chromecast Audio device again". Google added that it will take a few days for the app update to become available to everyone.
The "untrusted device" issue began last Sunday, March 9, and affects all Chromecast (2nd Gen) and Chromecast Audio devices worldwide, as reported here. The problem is reportedly caused by an expired security certificate in the devices, exactly 10 years after they were made. It stems from Google locking down the open DIAL protocol, which it developed alongside Netflix back in the day, to prevent competitors from creating compatible devices.

First fix rolling out

Google has announced that a fix for the problem is now rolling out. - "We have started to roll out a fix for the problem with Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio devices, which will be completed over the next few days. Your device must be connected to receive the update," Google wrote in a support update. Check regularly to see if your device is next in the queue, or consider moving on from Chromecast as there are many good reasons to do so.

Waiting for the second fix

Unfortunately, if you have performed a factory reset of your device to try to get it back online, you will have to wait longer, according to Google. - "If you performed a factory reset during initial troubleshooting, you may still be experiencing an issue where you cannot re-setup your device. We are working to resolve this as soon as possible," said Google. The company has not provided a timeline for a full fix.
