Plex is getting more expensive, and starting April 29, 2025 you will no longer be able to stream your ripped movies from outside your home without paying for a subscription.
The company has already shifted its focus away from local media to rentals and ad-supported movies.
The next step will be a significant price increase and changes to its privacy policy.
- "As of April 29, 2025, we are increasing the price of our Plex Pass subscription," it was announced. "The price increase applies to new and existing subscriptions, with the exception of existing Lifetime Plex Pass holders."
Price increases
The new prices are:
- Plex Pass monthly: From $5 to $7
- Plex Pass annually: From $40 to $70
- Plex Pass lifetime: From $120 to $250
The higher prices will go into effect on April 29, 2025, for both new and existing subscribers.
Charging for remote playback
In a controversial move, Plex will also start charging users to watch their personal media, including ripped movies on hard drives, remotely.
-
"We are also changing how remote playback works for streaming personal media (that is, playback when not on the same local network as the server). The reality is that we need more resources to continue putting forth the best personal media experience, and as a result, we will no longer offer remote playback as a free feature," said Plex.
Starting April 29, 2025, remote playback will require either a Plex Pass for the server owner or a Remote Watch Pass for the user, available at an "introductory price" of $2/month or $29/year.
Alternatives to Plex are apps such as Kodi, Jellyfin, Emby and Infuse.
