Sony has confirmed that it has suspended sales of home cinema projectors across all EU countries plus the UK.
It affects all current Sony home cinema projectors, including the Bravia-branded models launched last year, such as the Bravia Projector 9 (VPL-XW8100).
Existing stock in EU countries will be sold, but no new shipments will follow, the company told multiple media outlets, including Inside CI and Hiddenwires.
Linked to EU sanctions
Last year, we reported that a new EU regulation, taking effect on January 1, 2026, will ban the production and import of bulb projectors and replacement bulbs.
However, Sony’s situation is unrelated. Instead, it stems from EU sanctions on Russia and Belarus due to the war. One of Sony's suppliers now appears to be affected by these sanctions.
- "To ensure our compliance with applicable laws and regulations, including recent European export control regulations and trade restrictions, we have made the unavoidable decision to discontinue sales of select projector models in Europe, once the current stock is depleted. We remain committed to compliance with applicable laws and regulations and responsible business practices and are working closely with our business partners to support a smooth transition," Sony Europe said in a statement.
As a result, the future of Sony's projector sales in Europe now appears tied to the Russia-Ukraine war. Sony is the leading brand in home cinema projectors, according to market data recently presented to FlatpanelsHD.
