Nvidia is rolling out a new update for Shield TV, adding support for 120fps gaming on GeForce Now, though limited to 1080p resolution, along with bug fixes.
With this update, Nvidia marks nearly a decade of continued support for the Shield TV media box, although the box still runs an outdated version of Android, specifically Android 11.
- "Today we released Shield Experience Upgrade 9.2.1 (33.2.0.326) for all Shield and Shield Pro units. This update addresses many quality of life issues reported in the field, improving stability and compatibility with other devices in your home entertainment center," announced Nvidia.
120fps gaming support
While the update primarily targets bug fixes, including one for stuttering Dolby Vision playback, it also introduces a new feature for gamers:
- "Support to stream games on Nvidia GeForce Now at 120FPS up to 1080p resolution. GeForce Now Ultimate membership required," the company said.
GeForce Now is Nvidia’s cloud gaming service, where games are rendered on remote servers and streamed over the internet to your device. The 120Hz streaming feature is limited to 1080p due to the Shield TV's HDMI 2.0 output. Alternatively you can play in 4K at 60Hz. 4K at 120Hz would require HDMI 2.1, which in turn would necessitate new hardware.
To take advantage of 120fps streaming, your TV or monitor must support 1080p 120Hz input over HDMI.

New Shield hardware?
As Nvidia continues to support for Shield TV, many users are hopeful that a next-generation model is on the horizon.
Shield TV shares its underlying hardware with the original Nintendo Switch. With the anticipated launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, there is speculation that Nvidia could once again provide a similar hardware platform.
Nvidia has yet to comment on plans for Android versions beyond 11.
