TCL launches QM8K miniLED with WHVA panel, Dolby Atmos FlexConnect

27 May 2025 | Rasmus Larsen |

Today, TCL has unveiled and launched the successor to last year's QM851G. The QM8K features miniLED dimming zones, the WHVA LCD panel with wider viewing angles, and more.

QM8K is the US equivalent of the European C8K, which was announced earlier. FlatpanelsHD will soon publish a full review, but here is what you can look forward to in the meantime.

- "With its unmatched combination of groundbreaking panel technology, enhanced picture accuracy, stunning HDR impact, and super-large TV value, the TCL QM8K is the new ‘Ultimate Choice’," said Scott Ramirez, VP og Product Marketing and Development, TCL USA. "Once you see the ZeroBorder panel, you will never look at TV the same way again. Plus, with our new ultra-wide color viewing angle, the perfect seat is now anywhere in the room."

MiniLED zones and WHVA panel

QM8K is TCL’s first TV model in North America to feature TCL CSOT’s WHVA panel, a VA LCD panel with a new subpixel structure for improved viewing angles, as reported exclusively by FlatpanelsHD in January 2024. This panel also has a very slim 3–4 mm 'ZeroBorder' design. We have seen the panel in action, and it does significantly improve viewing angles. An upgraded 'Precise Dimming' miniLED system, as detailed at CES 2025, offers over 3000 dimming zones (98") to improve contrast for HDR content, both in movies and games, with virtually no lag from the miniLED zones in Game mode, according to TCL.

Filmmaker Mode, B&O audio and Atmos FlexConnect

TCL’s 2025 models are the first to include Filmmaker Mode, with Dolby Vision Filmmaker Mode coming via an update later this year, as reported by FlatpanelsHD in May. QM8K also features Audio by Bang & Olufsen with up-firing speakers for Dolby Atmos, plus a built-in B&O audio menu for sound adjustment. For the first time for any TV, QM8K includes Dolby Atmos FlexConnect, allowing you to wirelessly connect compatible FlexConnect speakers to the TV for a Dolby Atmos experience in the living room. FlatpanelsHD recently experienced the system firsthand so read this article for first impressions of FlexConnect. QM8K retains all of TCL’s other advanced TV features, including the AiPQ video processor, Google TV, Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+, 144Hz support (and 288Hz at 1080p), and IMAX Enhanced (though not yet supported on Disney+). It also comes with a 'Nextgen' ATSC 3.0 tuner. TCL says the 65" and 85" QM8K are available starting today, with the 75" and 98" versions arriving next month.
