The horror-thriller Sinners has been one of this year's biggest surprises. The movie can now be streamed at home in 4K HDR with expanded IMAX scenes.
Directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan in both lead roles, Sinners has been called a breath of fresh air that blends genres. It is an original story, which many viewers are calling for in a time of endless sequels.
The movie holds the highest viewer score rating among horror films on CinemaScore and has grossed 350 million dollars in theaters.
Sinners in IMAX format
After 48 days exclusively in theaters, Sinners was today released by Warner Bros for rental and purchase as a PVOD release (Premium VOD), meaning it is priced higher than standard rental/purchase movies. The price will drop later.
The movie was shot in “real” IMAX (1.43:1) and has been shown in IMAX theaters. However, it is rare for the expanded IMAX format to be preserved when movies are released digitally for streaming. It happens a bit more often on Blu-ray.
Sinners is an exception, which is good news for movie lovers at home. The movie's scenes shift between ultrawide 2.76:1 and the expanded IMAX 1.78:1 (close to a TV's 16:9 aspect ratio).
It us not the full-height 1.43:1 IMAX, which would require black bars on the sides of the TV, but it is as close as we get with modern TVs. The only home device that can display movies in “true” IMAX is the Apple Vision Pro headset, where black bars can disappear on the virtual screen inside, but even there, you do not get Sinners in 1.43:1.

Also 4K, HDR and Dolby Atmos
In addition to the IMAX aspect ratio, which has been confirmed for the digital version in the Apple TV app, Sinners is also presented in up to 4K, Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos.
The movie will be released in July on UHD Blu-ray – also with IMAX – and later again on the streaming service (HBO) Max.
