Chinese display panel maker BOE says that its first 32-inch 8K LCD panel with 120Hz refresh rate could be ready as soon as later this year.
Dell launched the first 8K monitor in 2017, but it was limited to 60Hz, which affects 8K detail even during moderate motion.
The next step is 8K at 120Hz, and Samsung and TCL (Samsung's LCD panel supplier) have already teased an 8K 120Hz LCD TV and an 8K 120Hz OLED panel, respectively.
8K 120Hz this year?
TCL and Samsung's displays are still not commercially available, so BOE's 32-inch 8K 120Hz panel, first showcased in May, may become the first.
- "BOE of China is, these days, the largest panel maker in the world. On its booth was a very good looking 31.5" 8K LCD monitor panel. It supports up to 120Hz refresh rate in 8K or can run at 240Hz in 4K. The firm told us that it expects some mass production later this year," wrote the 8K Association.
BOE only manufactures the raw LCD panels so actual market availability will ultimately depend on monitor brands such as Asus, Dell, LG, Samsung and others.
The 31.5-inch IPS LCD panel features 7680x4320 pixels, a contrast ratio of 3000:1 and covers the DCI-P3 color gamut.

The 8K challenge
It is still early days for 8K, so even if you find a graphics card capable of driving a monitor at 8K 120Hz, gaming at 8K 120Hz remains unlikely anytime soon.

We also need new connection standards to proliferate, such as DisplayPort 2.1, HDMI 2.2 or Thunderbolt 5, before we can talk about 8K in earnest.
Initially, the panel will most likely be used in monitors designed for graphics or video workflows.
