The upcoming PlayStation 6 will continue to support physical media, according to Insider Gaming, which reports that the console will feature a detachable disc drive.
While Microsoft has dropped the disc drive from its latest Xbox Series S and Series X models, Sony is sticking with a different strategy.
With the PS5 Slim, and later the PS5 Pro, Sony introduced a detachable disc drive, giving buyers the choice to purchase the console with a drive, add one later, or remove it if no longer needed.
Same approach for PlayStation 6
According to reliable leaker Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming – who accurately revealed the PS5's detachable disc drive – Sony is "firm" on carrying the concept forward with PlayStation 6.
In other words, Sony has no plans to sell PS6 games exclusively through its digital store, which is currently facing a lawsuit over inflated prices.
The disc drive would also let movie buffs continue to spin Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray discs via their console at a time when more and more manufacturers are abandoning disc players.

Internet required?
However, the current detachable disc drive requires an internet connection to authenticate via Sony’s servers, presumably as part of copy protection. In theory, Sony could one day shut down these servers.
The PlayStation 6 is also said to feature a cleaner, more streamlined design than the PlayStation 5.
PS6 is expected to launch in late 2027 or 2028.
