You can no longer sync your purchased movies to or from Google's movie store, as Google's participation in the Movies Anywhere initiative has ended.
Earlier this week, we reported that Disney movies have disappeared from Google's movie store worldwide. Now, we have learned that Google is no longer part of Movies Anywhere.
Until the situation becomes clearer, you may want to hold off on buying movies from Google.
Google out – now what?
Movies Anywhere launched in 2017 as Hollywood’s digital movie locker in the US, backed by studios Disney, Fox, Sony Pictures, Universal and Warner along with storefronts Amazon, Apple, Google and Vudu (Fandango).
Movies Anywhere lets you sync your purchased movies across services, allowing you to shop around for the best prices. Movies already synced to and from Google Play and YouTube will remain in your library, but new movie purchases will no longer sync with Google.
- "Effective 10/31/25, Google Play/YouTube will no longer participate in the Movies Anywhere program," the organization confirmed on a help page.

Linked to Disney spat?
It remains unclear whether the two events are connected, but it would not be far-fetched to think so. Movies Anywhere is built on technology from Disney and the timing aligns: October 31, the date Disney and Google's partnership agreement expired.
You can still buy movies and sync them to Movies Anywhere via storefronts such as Amazon, Apple TV, Rakuten and Fandango (Vudu).
