'Tron: Ares' out now in a version cinemas can't screen

Tron: Ares completes the trilogy that began with the cult classic Tron in 1982. Its high-contrast, colorful visuals are perfectly suited for HDR – something cinemas cannot deliver.

The sci-fi movie is now available at home via VOD storefronts such as Apple TV, Amazon and Fandango (Vudu).

It arrives 53 days after the theatrical premiere, which is a shorter holdback window than typical Disney titles that can get up to 60 days of exclusivity, but as premium VOD. Tron: Ares is released as regular VOD at standard pricing.


Better than in the cinema
The movie, starring Jared Leto, Jeff Bridges and Gillian Anderson, has received mixed reviews, but its visual design, best experienced in HDR to showcase its full color and contrast, has been widely praised.

Almost no theaters worldwide can reproduce HDR, which is not currently possible with projectors – it requires a huge LED screen – making the home release the first opportunity to experience the movie visually as intended by the filmmakers. HDR requires an OLED TV or a miniLED LCD TV with a high number of dimming zones.

The audio design has also been praised, with a soundtrack by Nine Inch Nails. At home, it can be experienced in Dolby Atmos.

In addition to the online release, Tron: Ares will be available on UHD Blu-ray starting January 6, 2026. Here you will get lossless Dolby Atmos audio but "only" HDR10 instead of Dolby Vision HDR. and Dolby Vision.
