While Netflix is removing support for Google Cast, Apple is finally adding it, but only in the Android version of the Apple TV app.
With added support for Google Cast – previously known as built-in Chromecast – Android users are now able to open the Apple TV app and cast movies or series wirelessly to TV devices like Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer.
It will also work with TVs that have built-in Google Cast such as Android and Google TVs as well as newer LG TVs.
Only supported on Android
Google Cast support was added only in the Android version of the Apple TV app. iPhone and iPad users do not have the option and must still rely on AirPlay instead. AirPlay is not embedded in the Android app either.
While cast systems are no longer as popular as they once were, and while Google has completely discontinued its Chromecast line of HDMI dongles, cast systems are still popular alternatives to apps on TVs as it allows users to more easily search for titles using a handheld device's keyboard, or as a way to use streaming subscriptions outside the home.
To enable Google Cast users must simply update the Apple TV app to the latest version, specifically version 2.2 or later.
