As OLED continues to outcompete LCD in the high-end monitor segment, Chinese HKC is now pushing back with the world’s first LCD monitor with RGB LED and zone dimming.
Like the first LCD TVs with RGB LED, the new monitor promises richer colors that surpass miniLED LCD and even QD-OLED. This is made possible by individual red, green and blue (RGB) LED in the backlight behind the LCD panel.
HKC claims that the M10 Ultra monitor exceeds 98% of BT.2020 and fully covers DCI-P3.
Nearly 5000 light control zones
HKC has also implemented zone dimming, with roughly 1600 dimming zones and 4788 RGB LED light control zones. In other words, HKC is multiplying its zone count by three to highlight that the RGB sub-LEDs can be controlled individually.
While this is still far from OLED's pixel-level control with around 8.3 million "zones" at 4K resolution, HKC positions it as a significantly step forward compared to miniLED LCD monitors.
The 32-inch M10 Ultra features 3840x2160 resolution, 165Hz refresh rate (or 330Hz at 1080p), peak brightness of up to 1600 nits and up to 1000 nits in fullscreen mode. According to HKC, it supports HDR workflows for professional use and delivers up to 20% lower power consumption than miniLED LCD.
Connectivity includes two DisplayPort 2.1 ports, two HDMI 2.1 ports and USB Type-C with up to 98W power delivery.
HKC has not disclosed the specific LCD panel type.
The HKC M10 Ultra will initially launch in China, but pricing has not yet been announced. With the technology now reaching the consumer market, more RGB LED LCD monitors are expected to follow in the near future.
