2025 was the first major movie year since the pandemic, but 2026 is shaping up to be bigger as major franchises return and big directors bring new stories. FlatpanelsHD provides an overview.
First came the pandemic, then the strikes, but Hollywood is now back in action.
Hollywood today, however, is not the same as it was before the pandemic. 2025, contrary to some expectations, did not mark a cinema revival in either the US or internationally, and one of the biggest film studios today, Netflix, remains largely opposed to theatrical releases.

Biggest movies of 2026
One of the biggest films on the calendar is The Odyssey from the ever-reliable Christopher Nolan. Star Wars is also returning with The Mandalorian & Grogu.
Denis Villeneuve's impressive Dune trilogy comes to a close, while Marvel fans can look forward to two releases: Avengers: Doomsday and Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
New, original science sci-fi are also on the slate, including Steven Spielberg's Disclosure Day and Ridley Scott's The Dog Stars.

Animation and a wildcard
New animated films are also on the way, including Pixar's Toy Story 5 and Hoppers, Illumination Entertainment's Minions 3 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and The Angry Birds Movie 3. Shrek 5 has been delayed and will no longer debut in 2026.

A potential wildcard this year is The Adventures of Cliff Booth, written by Quentin Tarantino, directed by David Fincher, and starring Brad Pitt. It is set for a streaming premiere on Netflix, though the final release date has yet to be confirmed.
