Sony Japan has announced that it will stop selling all current Blu-ray recorder models globally, with no successors planned.
In July 2024, Sony cut 40% of jobs in its optical media division. In January 2025, Sony confirmed that it would stop producing recordable Blu-ray discs, MiniDisc and cassettes.
This latest development therefore comes as no surprise.
- "After February 2026, we will end the shipment of all Blu-ray disc recorder models sequentially. In addition, there is no successor model. We would like to express my heartfelt thanks for the many customers who have used it so far," Sony Japan announced (machine translated).
Only Blu-ray recorders
The exit concerns only Blu-ray recorders with a built-in Blu-ray player. At this time, Sony has no plans to stop producing regular Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray players for movie playback.

Sony said that its BDZ-ZW1900 recorder from 2024 as well as the BDZ-FBT4200, BDZ-FBT2200 and BDZ-FBW2200 recorders from 2023 are discontinued as of today's announcement. The remaining models will be phased out gradually after February 2026.

While Oppo, Samsung and LG have all abandoned Blu-ray players entirely, Sony, Panasonic and a handful of high-end niche brands continue to offer Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray players.
However, whether Sony will make a broader exit from optical media is one of the questions hanging over next year's TCL-Sony partnership.
