HBO: Harry Potter series "next level" compared to the movies

11 Feb 2026 | Rasmus Larsen |

Bigger than Game of Thrones, Netflix's Stranger Things and Disney's The Mandalorian? HBO Max is raising expectations to the max ahead of the premiere of its Harry Potter series.

Plans to adapt the Harry Potter books into a major TV series were confirmed in April 2023, as HBO Max rebranded as Max.

The name has since reverted to HBO Max, but the series plans remain unchanged. It is a 10-year project spanning 7 seasons, following the structure of J.K. Rowling's books.

While the series will eventually be taken over by Netflix, it remains uncertain whether the Warner and HBO Max acquisition will be completed before or after the premiere, which is set to "early 2027".

The biggest streaming event?

Regardless of timing, Warner Bros Discovery promises the series will be massive. The comments came during a presentation where HBO Max revealed March 26 launch plans for the UK, completing its European expansion. - "It takes theatrical to a whole different level. In the series you can go deeper, and tell more of the pieces that you didn't capture in a two-hour movie," said J.B. Perrette, CEO and President of Global Streaming at Warner Bros Discovery, according to Deadline, adding: - "(It will be) the biggest streaming event in the history of HBO Max and arguably in streaming, period. It's number one, two and three in many ways."

J.K. Rowling is involved

The series stars Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter. Author J.K. Rowling is executive producer and is also involved in writing and casting. - "I read the first two episodes of the forthcoming HBO Harry Potter series and they are SO, SO, SO GOOD!," Rowling wrote last year. The budget has not been confirmed, but Hollywood chatter estimates $75–100 million per episode, with a total investment of up to $4 billion. The first season is expected to have 6-8 episodes. HBO typically produces series in 4K HDR with Dolby Atmos audio, though specific details for the Harry Potter series have not yet been disclosed. - Source: Deadline
