Nvidia's GeForce Now lands on Fire TV sticks, but with limitations

13 Feb 2026 | Rasmus Larsen |

One of the easiest and cheapest ways to stream AAA games via Nvidia's GeForce Now is now an Amazon Fire TV stick. However, there are notable limitations.

After perviously launching on select Fire TV... TVs, the GeForce Now app is now also available on newer Fire TV sticks. You just need to connect a compatible game controller.

Nvidia confirms that initial support includes Fire TV Stick 4K Plus (2nd Gen) running Fire OS 8.1.6.0 or later, Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen) with Fire OS 8.1.6.0 or later, and Fire TV Stick 4K Max (1st Gen) with Fire OS 7.7.1.1.

Cloud gaming with limitations

These Fire TV sticks offer an easy and affordable entry point to cloud gaming. They also support Microsoft's Xbox cloud gaming app. However, the experience comes with clear limitations. Fire TV sticks are limited to 1080p at 60fps when streaming GeForce Now. They rely on the aging MPEG (H.264) video codec rather than more efficient codecs such as HEVC or AV1, and playback is restricted to SDR video and stereo audio.

How to play with reduced latency

In comparison, Nvidia Shield recently received an upgrade enabling GeForce Now at 1080p120 in SDR – or 4K60 with HDR. LG's 2026 OLED models will be the first TVs to support GeForce Now gaming at 4K120 with HDR. Higher frame rates, such as 120fps, significantly reduce latency in cloud gaming, which is still struggling to gain traction, despite the promise of playing the latest console games on the big screen without the need for a physical game console.
