Starting in March, the Netflix app will stop working on PlayStation 3, which was once the streamer's most popular platform. Netflix will also discontinue support for some other devices.
Game consoles used to be popular media streaming devices, including for Netflix.
However, this was largely due to a lack of better alternatives. Game consoles have limited support for advanced formats such as Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and HDR10+. They also lack match frame rate and match SDR/HDR features, and have very high energy consumption. You really shouldn't use them for video streaming.
PS3 gets the axe
PlayStation 3 still works, but Netflix has decided to discontinue support for the console. It will happen after March 2, 2026, according to Reddit users, who have uploaded Netflix' on-screen message from PS3.
In the early 2010s, PS3 was the most popular TV device for streaming Netflix, representing over 30% of Netflix streaming, according to the company. It was also the first console to support Netflix in 1080p. PS3 was first launched in november 2006, but Netflix was not added until later.
If you still have not moved on, you will be forced to next month, but it is no big loss. You can get a better streaming experience using very cheap streaming sticks or ideally a more capable device like Apple TV 4K, which remains relatively affordable. Here are FlatpanelsHD's recommendations.
PS3 was the last seventh-generation console to still officially support Netflix. PS4 and PS5 are not affected by Netflix's decision.

Smart TVs and set-top boxes
There are scattered reports about +10-year old Smart TVs from various brands also losing support for Netflix. This is an ongoing issue, as older Smart TVs never the receive OS upgrades required to support newer app versions.
It remains unclear exactly which Smart TVs will be affected, but it lines up with Netflix's previous app purges.
In addition, some set-top boxes will lose support for Netflix. UK broadcaster BT's TV Box (Z4) and BT TV Recordable Box (G4) set-top boxes have been confirmed, but we suspect that other older set-top boxes around the world could also be affected starting March 4, 2026.
About a year ago, Netflix ended support for older Fire TV devices after 8-10 years of support. Two years ago, the app was removed from older Smart TVs as well as the 2nd and 3rd generation Apple TVs (without tvOS).
