Microsoft is expanding support for high refresh rate displays in Windows 11 with an upcoming update that will add support for monitors up to 5000Hz.
The Windows 11 update is detailed on Microsoft's website here, highlighting that "monitors can now report refresh rates higher than 1000 Hz".
However, the upper limit in Windows 11 is actually much higher at 5000Hz, according to Blur Buster's Mark Rejhon, who has been pushing Microsoft to expand support for higher refresh rates.
- "Also, I also mentioned that I have confirmed multiple manufacturers are already working on 2000 Hz displays that will arrive by 2030," wrote Mark Rejhon.
1000Hz monitors incoming
Multiple 1000Hz and 1040Hz LCD monitors are scheduled to launch in 2026 from brands like AOC, Philips, TCL and Samsung, although we still expect 720Hz OLED monitors to significantly outperform these LCD monitors in motion clarity.
Can the human eye even perceive such high refresh rates? Yes, and Blur Busters explains why in its article, now encouraging the industry to aim for over 10000Hz for "retina refresh rates" in the future.
Still, that is something for the future. We are now getting 1000Hz LCD monitors, and hopefully OLED will follow soon. To go far beyond, we need new technologies to proliferate, initially HDMI 2.2 and next-generation DisplayPort.
