Thomson's Box 245 features an upgraded chipset and four times the storage of its predecessor, Box 240. It can add Google TV to any TV.
The streaming box is an alternative to sticks and boxes from companies such as Google, Nokia, and Strong.
It connects to a TV via HDMI and provides access to all apps and features available on the Google TV platform, including Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Apple TV and YouTube. It can be fully controlled using the TV's remote (via HDMI CEC) or the bundled remote.
Upgraded hardware
Thomson's Box 245 replaces Box 240. It features an upgraded Amlogic S905Y5-B chipset (compared to Y4 before) and 32GB of storage, up from 8GB. However, RAM remains unchanged at 2GB.
The box supports decoding of both HEVC and AV1, the latest and most efficient video codecs used by streaming services. It supports up to 4K at 60fps. External USB sources can be connected via the USB-A or USB-C ports.
Another upgrade is the remote control, which now features backlit buttons, according to Thomson.
Dolby Atmos but not Vision
The box supports Dolby Atmos audio but not Dolby Vision HDR. Instead, it supports HDR10.
Box 245 remains a step below Box Plus 270, which FlatpanelsHD tested last year. The 270 model supports Dolby Vision, but there are also other differences between the two.
Thomson Box 245 will roll out across Europe in the coming weeks for 90 Euro.
