The new software update is available for all Apple TVs with tvOS, but only newer Apple TV 4K models get the 'Continuous Audio Connection' feature. There are also other changes.
FlatpanelsHD covered the new audio feature in February, and tvOS 26.4 is now available to download for all owners of Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K.
Continuous Audio Connection
Continuous Audio Connection keeps the audio link active, preventing dropouts and popping sounds on receivers or soundbars such as Sonos. Audio is output as decoded, uncompressed PCM (Dolby MAT), which also prevents fluctuations in audio volume.

This does not mean that all content is now output as Dolby Atmos. Dolby MAT is simply an uncompressed PCM audio signal with support for metadata – stereo remains stereo. If your receiver reports Atmos when the source is not Atmos, it is incorrectly configured by the manufacturer and you should consider disabling the new audio feature.
Note that Continuous Audio Connection only works on Apple TV 4K (2nd and 3rd Gen) and only when connected to an Atmos-compatible audio system.
Other changes in tvOS 26.4
tvOS 26.4 finally removes the iTunes apps that have long remained on the homescreen without functionality after Apple moved movie rentals and streaming to the Apple TV app.
- "This update fixes an issue with audio playback on Apple TV 4K that can occur when sound transitions between programs with different formats, like Dolby Atmos and stereo. iTunes Movies and TV Shows apps removed with all content and playback consolidated into Apple TV app. This update also includes performance and stability improvements," Apple said.
A new 'Genius' section has been added to the Apple TV app, offering personalized movie recommendations, although it does not appear to be working yet in most regions.
Finally, tvOS 26.4 introduces a new quick menu for subtitles, allowing users to adjust font, size, colors and background. The button can be found during video playback in apps that use the standard tvOS player.
