'Avatar: Fire and Ash' available digitally next week, UHD Blu-ray in May

25 Mar 2026 | Rasmus Larsen |

After more than 100 days of waiting, viewers will finally be able to enjoy the third chapter of Avatar at home – for the first time in HDR in most countries – starting next week.

Disney's Avatar: Fire and Ash gets its global digital premiere on March 31 via storefronts such as Apple TV, Amazon and Fandango (Vudu). It can be pre-ordered now for $20 / £14 / €14.

This is the purchase price. The rental version will arrive later.

4K HDR with Dolby Atmos

The vast majority of cinemas are incapable of presenting movies in HDR with extended brightness and color range, but at home you can enjoy all 3 hours and 17 minutes in full glory with 4K resolution, Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos sound. The second film grossed $2.32 billion in tickets worldwide, while the third has so far grossed about $1.5 billion. Creator and director James Cameron has said that films four and five depend on the success of Avatar: Fire and Ash. After the digital premiere on March 31, it will take another month and a half before Avatar: Fire and Ash arrives onBlu-ray and UHD Blu-ray (with Dolby Vision, 100GB disc) starting May 19. The film will later come to Disney+, but no date has been announced – for the second film, it took over two months.

What about HFR?

Avatar: Fire and Ash – like Avatar: The Way of Water – is one of the few films created in high frame rate (HFR), with 48fps instead of the usual 24fps. This applies to the 3D version. Avatar: The Way of Water is available in HFR exclusively on Apple Vision Pro. There is currently no confirmation regarding Avatar: Fire and Ash. Also read: Do today's TVs support 48fps HFR like 'Avatar: The Way of Water'? Meta has tried to get involved through closer collaboration with James Cameron's Lightstorm Vision studio, but no Meta Quest headset has hardware decoding for MV-HEVC, which is required for 4K 3D at 48fps, and the LCD panels in Meta Quest cannot display 4K or HDR at all. A 3D Blu-ray version will be made available but limited to 1080p, SDR and 24fps, as per the 3D Blu-ray specification.
