You can now dive into PC games on the micro-OLED screens of Apple Vision Pro, as Steam Link is now available, though initially limited to 2D games.
The announcement came from Valve this week, and Steam Link is now available in beta via Apple's TestFlight app.
Steam Link lets you stream purchased games from a PC with Steam over your home network wirelessly to other devices.
- "We are happy to announce a native Steam Link app for visionOS! This update improves network performance, allows streaming up to 4K resolutions, and allows you to dynamically adjust the curve of the display in panoramic mode. This client is for 2D streaming only and does not support VR content," Valve announced.
Only 2D games for now
As Valve notes, the current Steam Link for Apple Vision Pro is limited to 2D games, despite Steam's extensive library of VR titles.
Steam Link joins other visionOS options such as Moonlight/Sunshine, ALVR (true PC VR gaming) and MirrorPlay. Meta's Quest also supports several these types of game streaming apps.
There is no word yet from Valve on foveated streaming, which allocates most bandwidth to the area you are actively looking at using Apple Vision Pro's eye-tracking sensors. Valve will support foveated streaming on its upcoming Steam Frame headset, and Nvidia recently announced plans to support foveated streaming and 4K120 on Apple Vision Pro.
Apple Vision Pro has had a slow start, but developers are gradually exploring immersive experiences in gaming, education, medical applications, sports and more.
