PlayStation responds in case about online lock on offline games

30 Apr 2026 | Rasmus Larsen |

Sony confirms that all offline games purchased digitally are initially locked behind online DRM, but only for a limited period after which a permanent license is granted. This addresses the biggest concerns, but not all.

FlatpanelsHD covered the issue earlier this week. In short, PS4 and PS5 games newly purchased from the PlayStation Store stop working after 30 days if the console has not connected to the internet.

This new form of DRM strengthens long-standing concerns that users do not truly own the games they purchase. Could console makers or game publishers change or even revoke licenses in the future? What happens if companies shut down or servers go offline?

Sony: A one-time online check

After a week of speculation, the company behind PlayStation has finally commented to GameSpot: - "Players can continue to access and play their purchased games as usual. A one-time online check is required to confirm the game's license, after which no further check-ins are required," Sony Interactive Entertainment said. This supports an online theory suggesting that a one-time check is required after 14-16 days – the refund period for games – after which the buyer receives a permanent license. It is speculated that it closes a loophole where some users refunded purchases while retaining access.

Concerns remain

PlayStation's lack of response had already sparked widespread debate. The statement eases the biggest concerns but confirms others: Game companies can change the terms of licenses for purchased games without notice or user consent. The longest recorded PlayStation Network outage lasted 24 consecutive days. The new DRM also makes it inconvenient to buy games online and move the console to locations without internet access, such as a vacation home – you would need to wait at least 14-16 days. In offline scenarios, physical discs may be a better alternative, as they are not affected by the new DRM. - Source: GameSpot
