The class action lawsuit in California accuses Roku of shipping defective OS updates that effectively "brick" Roku TVs only a few years old.
The Roku TVs in question were sold between December 2024 and today, specifically Roku's own Select and Plus Series TVs as well as TCL 3/4/5/6 Series Roku TVs, according to a report by Android Police.
- "Roku's software updates are repetitively defective, materially impairing the functionality of Roku products, rendering many consumers' televisions either entirely unusable ('bricked'), blacked out or otherwise substantially degraded in terms of device performance," the lawyer alleged.
It is the second lawsuit of this kind this year, as consumers seek to hold TV brands accountable for faulty software. Amazon was recently sued over claims that it "bricked" older Fire TV sticks.
Class action lawsuit
The Else v. Roku, Inc., et al. lawsuit has class action status and also targets TTE Technology, doing business as TCL North America, since some of these Roku TVs are TCL-branded.
Users have repeatedly complained to Roku about system failures, but Roku has allegedly failed to provide a solution. The group of consumer is now asking for compensation and for the court to force Roku to fix the issues.
