The tech giant is preparing Google TV for motion-controlled pointer remotes, which could suggest that Google, or an existing or new partner, wants to adopt an LG-like remote.
We did not get a new Android TV version for Google TV or any major new features at Google I/O 2026. Instead, Google's main focus was on Gemini and... pointer remotes.
- "The TV experience that we once knew is changing. Gemini is changing the way we discover and stream content with voice, but how we use the remote is evolving, too. Pointer remotes bring motion-controlled input to the big screen, unlocking faster user navigation across the Google TV Home page and within content-heavy apps. To ensure your app is ready for this shift and provides a great experience for all users, now is the time to start thinking about pointing input," said Paul Lammertsma, Developer Relations Engineer, Google TV, and added:
- "You'll need support for hover states, scrollable containers, and cursor clicks to enable pointer remote interactions for your app on Google TV."
Google also instructs app developers to indicate on the Google Play Store if apps have been updated for pointer remotes.
Why pointer remotes?
It is unclear why Google is suddenly so interested in pointer remotes. At this time, LG is the only TV maker to use a pointer remote – the so-called Magic Remote – but LG does not use Google TV in any of its TVs, but rather it own platform, webOS.
It would be a stretch to suggest that LG is planning to switch from webOS to Google TV – there are no indications or rumors of that – but perhaps another TV maker is considering it?
How a pointer remote will work on Google TV
Current Google TV partners include brands such as Sony, TCL, Hisense, Sharp and Xiaomi, while Google TV streaming player partners include brands like Walmart, Strong, Mecool and Nvidia. None of these have shown concepts or much interest in pointer remotes.
Of course, there is also Google itself. It discontinued the popular Chromecast lineup in favor of a new, pricier box-style Google TV Streamer that has largely been a disappointment. It is possible that Google is preparing for the next generation, but it is pure speculation at this time.

New Gemini features
At Google I/O 2026, the company also highlighted its Gemini assistant, which has been expanded on Google TV to respond with "a mix of visuals, videos, and text to help users find what they need, when they need it".
How Gemini now works on Google TV – at least in the US
Google is encouraging streaming apps to use the new Engage SDK (formerly Discovery API), so the Google TV homescreen and Gemini can better serve recommendations and 'Continue Watching'. The old API will be discontinued in the second half of 2027. Is Netflix finally going to let its content be fully indexed? Probably not.
