Original Chromecast begins failing for users

22 May 2026 | Rasmus Larsen |

Google has already ended support for the first-generation Chromecast, and now many units have suddenly stopped working at the same time around the world.

The original Chromecast launched in 2013 and received its final software update in November 2022 after 9 years of support from Google.

The device has continued to function, though without guarantees from Google, and streaming services have also started updating their support documentation to say that they can no longer guarantee compatibility with the original Chromecast, only newer generations.

Has stopped working

Chromecast was hugely popular and many of the older devices are still in use around the world. However, reports have flooded in over recent weeks claiming that the devices have suddenly stopped working, according to 9to5Google and Reddit. Owners say the Chromecast devices have either stopped working entirely or are experiencing major issues when casting from streaming apps, including Google's own YouTube. Some users report that screen and browser tab mirroring still works, but casting directly from streaming apps does not.

Final blow or software update

Since Google has discontinued support, there is no guarantee that the issue will be fixed. If not, this could mark the definitive end of the first-generation Chromecast after 13 years. We'll circle back with an update as soon as we can. Thank you for your patience," a Google spokesperson said.
