After supporting ultrawide displays in a limited form for some time, macOS 27 Golden Gate will add native support for ultrawide monitors on Mac and MacBooks.
The new feature was announced at WWDC 26 this week.
- "Now you can get higher resolutions on ultrawide displays, such as 5K at 120Hz. And your display arrangements stay exactly as you left them, for a seamless experience every time you plug in," announced Apple.
The upcoming macOS 27, expected this fall, is compatible only with Apple Silicon-powered Macs. None of the older Intel-based Macs will receive macOS 27.
Ultrawide on Mac, Vision Pro, Apple TV 4K
None of Apple's Macs or MacBooks come with an ultrawide panel, and there are no rumors of upcoming ultrawide Apple products, so the update is intended primarily for users who connect external monitors for work or gaming.
These 21:9 monitors are typically 29 to 49 inches in size, with resolutions such as 2560x1080, 3440x1440 and 5120x2160 (5K2K).
Apple has shown increasing interest in ultrawide, though. In late 2024, the company added ultrawide support for Mac virtual displays in Apple Vision Pro with the release of visionOS 2.2. Apple also added support for ultrawide monitors, projectors and TVs on Apple TV 4K (3rd Gen) with the release of tvOS 18.2 in late 2024.
Ultrawide monitors are also becoming more popular elsewhere. You can see all the upcoming 21:9 OLED monitors coming in 2026 here.
