MSI unveils the world's first printed OLED monitor

A third OLED panel technology is about to enter the monitor market. MSI has unveiled the 271UPJW12, the world's first monitor to feature an inkjet-printed RGB-stripe OLED panel from TCL CSOT.

TCL CSOT, TCL's display manufacturing arm, has been teasing its inkjet-printed OLED technology for years.

We expect multiple monitor brands to adopt the panels, but MSI is first out of the gate with the announcement of the 27-inch 271UPJW12. Interestingly, MSI has since removed its original press release.


OLED with RGB-stripe pixels
TCL CSOT's inkjet-printed OLED panels use a native RGB-stripe subpixel layout, promising improved overall image sharpness, particularly for text rendering.

LG Display and Samsung Display have responded by introducing RGB-stripe versions of their WOLED and QD-OLED panels.

The MSI 271UPJW12 features a 27-inch 4K (3840x2160) panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, VRR support, a 0.1ms response time, 10-bit color, 99% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage, over 300 nits of fullscreen brightness and peak brightness exceeding 1000 nits. Other features include an anti-glare coating, HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 1.4 and USB-C.

Update: MSI says that it expects the monitor to go into mass production in late September. It will carry a price of 700 Euro.


A new OLED challenger
Pricing has yet to be announced, but the big story is the arrival of a third OLED panel technology for monitors. Increased competition should benefit consumers by accelerating innovation and bring down prices.

The panel also marks the first OLED monitor panel from a Chinese display manufacturer to directly challenge South Korea's LG Display and Samsung Display.

TCL CSOT has reportedly started production of the 27-inch panel this month at its existing Gen 5.5 OLED production line. The company is simultaneously preparing a massive Gen 8.6 OLED fab, which is scheduled to begin mass production in 2027. FlatpanelsHD published our first impressions of the technology last year.
