Asus declared TN LCD monitors dead and buried when it unveiled no fewer than four 25-inch OLED gaming monitors, all with 1080p resolution and HDR, and refresh rates of up to 720Hz.
It sounds like game over for TN LCD gaming monitors, if you ask Asus:
- "For years, esports monitors almost exclusively wielded TN panels. Built for pure speed, these monitors made stratospheric refresh rates possible, but they struggled to shake off the limitations of the tech: washed-out colors, shallow contrast, and poor viewing angles, to name a few. The latest OLED panels kick those limitations to the curb," said Asus.
If you ask us, we have been saying the same thing for almost a decade now, but it obviously takes time to refine the technology, transition an entire industry and build the necessary production capacity.
- "There’s some discussion online about the value of things like inky blacks, vibrant colors, and professional-grade color accuracy from the perspective of esports gaming. Will they make your games more fun to play? Almost certainly. Will they bump up your K/D ratio? Maybe not. But here's a quality of OLED panels that offers an inarguable competitive edge for esports gaming: incredible motion clarity," Asus concluded.

Two of the new 25-inch monitors use WOLED panels from LG Display, while the other two use the just-announced QD-OLED panel from Samsung Display.
They all have 1080p resolution and support HDR with peak brightness of up to 1700-1800 nits. However, refresh rates vary between 360Hz, 540Hz, 560Hz and 720Hz. Another major difference is that the WOLED models have a glossy coating while the QD-OLED models are matte. One of the monitors features DisplayPort 2.1 and Dolby Vision.
