As the patent dispute with InterDigital escalates further, Disney+ has been forced to also disable Google Cast (Chromecast) and AirPlay 2 in some countries.
For now, the latest ruling by the Unified Patent Court (UPC) affects Disney+ streaming only in Germany and the Netherlands.
However, we have seen how quickly this can spiral out of control: Disney+ has already lost 4K, HDR10, Dolby Vision and 3D in large parts of the EU, and the patent dispute with InterDigital is expanding to also target Disney's backup plan for 4K.
Google Cast and AirPlay 2 gone missing
It is the eighth injunction InterDigital has won against Disney since February 2025, according to BroadcastNow.
Initially, in early September, Disney+ only disabled Google Cast, but code found by X user Aaron reveals that the streaming service is now also disabling AirPlay.
The casting feature has been disabled in the Disney+ app across Android, iOS, Windows and macOS. Users are instead met with an error message stating that the features are not available in their country.
Disney can now choose to appeal or pay licensing fees to InterDigital.
