First certified HDMI 2.2 Ultra96 cables support up to 96Gbps

HDMI 2.2 is getting closer and you can now buy Ultra96 cables capable of handling the extreme 96Gbps bandwidth – twice that of HDMI 2.1.

There are no HDMI 2.2 devices on the market so you do not need these cables just yet, but they are now available to buy, certified by the HDMI organization, and the price is not prohibitive.

Silkland is selling a 2-meter cable for $33 with deliveries starting October 5, as reported by Videocardz. Elecom has also had its cables certified and will put them on sale in mid-November. Pricing has not yet been announced.


HDMI 2.2 launches in 2027
Cables will have to be ready before the first TVs and players with HDMI 2.2 can hit the market. This is expected to happen in 2027, according to the HDMI organization, but it is not yet known whether TVs, monitors, graphics cards or consoles will be first.

HDMI 2.2 enables, for the first time, uncompressed 4K at 240Hz and 8K at 60Hz. Under certain conditions or with signal compression, it can also deliver 4K at 480Hz and 8K at 120Hz or higher, as well as 1440p at over 1000Hz on PC monitors.

Not to be confused with Ultra High Speed
HDMI 2.1 supports up to 48Gbps, while HDMI 2.2 supports three bandwidth tiers: 64, 80 and 96Gbps.

The cables from Silkland and Elecom are certified for Ultra96, meaning the maximum bandwidth supported by HDMI 2.2. Going forward, it is important to distinguish between Ultra96 and 'Ultra High Speed'. The latter is only certified for up to 48Gbps (but may be capable of transmitting more), in other words HDMI 2.1.
