More than 80% of all Xbox One and Xbox Series game discs can already be redeemed as digital versions, as Ubisoft has joined the program just weeks after beta testing began.
While PlayStation is preparing to say goodbye to video game discs, Xbox has announced plans for a disc-to-digital feature that gives you both a physical and a digital version of a purchased game.
It is as simple as inserting the disc into your Xbox console's disc drive, as demonstrated by public beta testers. Your console will do the rest once the feature rolls out publicly to everyone in the near future.
Over 80% of games compatible
At the time of the announcement, Microsoft warned that not all game discs would be compatible at launch, but the situation looks better than some had feared.
14 days ago, roughly 71% of all physical Xbox One and Xbox Series games (1864 games in total) indexed by the community-driven Xct.live tracker were compatible with the disc-to-digital program.
Now, more than 80% are compatible, meaning more than 1523 games. 246 titles are not compatible (13%), while 23 are variant-dependent and 72 game titles remain unconfirmed.
Ubisoft joins the program
The notable expansion came as Ubisoft joined the program, bringing game franchises like Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, Just Dance and Tom Clancy into the fold.
The bad news is that game discs for the Xbox 360 and the original Xbox are not currently supported.
If you claim an Xbox One/Series game disc and later give it to someone else, you will lose your entitlement if the new owner uses the disc-to-digital feature. Game developers can also revoke licenses at any time. Microsoft has published this FAQ.
