Base PlayStation 5 also gets AI upscaling

02 Oct 2026 | Rasmus Larsen |

It is not the same PSSR feature found on PS5 Pro, but a scaled-down solution called QSSR that delivers sharper pictures through AI upscaling, according to Sony.

Console games can rarely be rendered at 4K, even though that is what your TV tells you when it receives the HDMI signal. Instead, games are rendered at a lower resolution and upscaled on the console before the video signal is output.

The way console games are upscaled is changing as AI machine learning is being adopted. AI upscaling has been one of the major selling points of the PlayStation 5 Pro, which initially introduced PSSR and later PSSR 2.0.

PlayStation 5 gets QSSR

The base PlayStation 5, which is in many millions of homes around the world, is getting a scaled-down version that Sony calls Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR). You can download system software version 26.06-14.10.00 now. - "We are bringing the benefits of AI-guided upscaling to PS5. While PSSR remains the gold standard on PS5 Pro, QSSR provides some notable improvements to both image detail and image stability on PS5.," said Daniel Craig, Principal Engineer, Graphics R&D at PlayStation. Sony says QSSR stems from the same Project Amethyst initiative that, in collaboration with AMD, led to PSSR on PS5 Pro.

First games are ready

Games must be updated, or built from the ground up, to support QSSR – as is the case with PSSR. The first two games to receive updates are Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. The fact that only two games are available at launch confirms that games already updated for PSSR on PS5 Pro cannot automatically use QSSR on PS5. - "At Sucker Punch, we’re excited to bring QSSR to Ghost of Yōtei players so that they can experience the world we’ve created with even more clarity and detail. QSSR excels at resolving the fine details in our characters and environments and does so with a level of temporal stability that hasn’t been possible on the PS5 console until now. We’ve long wished that all PS5 players could experience the incredible image quality that PSSR brings to PS5 Pro, and QSSR is a positive step towards that goal," said Jasmin Patry, Lead Rendering Engineer / Sucker Punch Productions. The partners have released the following videos demonstrating QSSR:

New PlayStation 5 revision

In related new, alongside the launch of a Wolverine Limited Edition console, Sony has also introduced a new revision of the PlayStation 5. According to @Modyfikator89 on X, who took the console apart, the latest PS5 revision features, among other things, an improved cooling solution similar to that of PS5 Pro, a new motherboard and a replaceable CR2032 battery. This revision is expected to eventually be rolled out to all newly manufactured PlayStation 5 consoles.
