After adding 4K Dolby Vision earlier this year, Apple and Dolby are now also deploying Dolby Atmos audio for Formula 1 races.
Apple has the exclusive US broadcasting rights to all Formula 1 races, and starting with the US Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, from October 22 to 25, you can watch races with Dolby Atmos audio.
- "Sound is really the piece that brings the emotion, the crowd cheering, in Formula 1," John Couling, Dolby SVP of entertainment, told Sports Business Journal. "It's the tension created as the cars are at the start line or the noise of that particular engine which is hugely iconic, a unique signature, so once you've got this ability to create this immersive soundscape, you can really embed people within the emotion of the story."
How to watch in 4K HDR and Atmos
Formula 1 is included with an Apple TV subscription at no additional charge. You need an Apple TV 4K or the Apple TV app on another TV device capable of high-frame-rate 4K Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos decoding.
You should also have a proper external Dolby Atmos audio system – your TV's speakers are not enough. The upgrade to Dolby Atmos comes after Formula 1 races were previously offered in 5.1 surround.
