StudioCanal says that it has invested close to 25 million Euro to restore nearly 1000 classic feature films over the past 7 years, including Manhunter and Pan's Labyrinth.
The distributor is launching a new StudioCanal Classics label with responsibility for bringing all these classics to movie lovers worldwide.
- "We are immeasurably proud to announce StudioCanal Classics. Our world-class library represents a unique opportunity to champion some of the most beloved, iconic, timeless and influential films spanning more than 100 years of cinema history. Through expert restoration, thoughtful curation and innovative audience engagement, we have a responsibility to preserve the enduring impact and cultural legacy of these extraordinary films and filmmakers, while bringing celebrated classics back to cinemas around the world. We believe that every generation, in every corner of the world, should have the opportunity to discover, celebrate and revere some of the greatest films ever made. Because great films live forever," said Anna Marsh, CEO of StudioCanal.
Look forward to Pan's Labyrinth in a restored 4K version
Manhunter and Pan's Labyrinth
Some of the upcoming releases based on brand new 4K restorations, made from the original 35mm camera negatives, are Manhunter: The Final Cut, overseen by Michael Mann, and Pan's Labyrinth, supervised by Guillermo del Toro.
The company also highlighted Terminator 2: Judgment Day, but this remains the restoration from 2017, which is controversial due to its heavy use of digital noise reduction.
Terminator 2 and Pan's Labyrinth will also both be released in 3D. The former is the 3D conversion from 2017 while the latter appears to be based on the brand new 4K restoration.
In addition, StudioCanal highlighted 4K restorations of To Be or Not to Be from 1942, Blood Simple from 1984, Inside Llewyn Davis from 2013, Accident from 1967 and Chaplin from 1992, starring Robert Downey Jr.
These titles will see 4K releases across UHD Blu-ray, streaming, theaters and more.
A lot more to come in 2027
The company has more than 18000 titles in its library spanning 100 years of film history. It teased that viewers can look forward to a lot more next year:
- "StudioCanal Classics will soon reveal its 2027 theatrical and home entertainment slate which will include the release of a highly anticipated David Lynch collection."
