Review: Panasonic releases HLG HDR update for select 2016 TVs

|

In February 2017, Panasonic promised to add support for HLG, Hybrid Log Gamma, to select 2016 TVs. The update us now available to download.

2016 Panasonic TVs gain HLG

The firmware update was released last week. It is supposed to add support for HLG HDR on DX750, DX780, DX800, and DX900. These are 2016 models. Panasonic’s 2017 models already feature HLG, besides HDR10.

HLG, or Hybrid Log Gamma, was developed by UK's BBC and Japan's NHK. It is the third HDR format and differs from the other formats in that sense that it can include both traditional SDR and HDR in the same broadcast or live signal.

HLG

The update can be downloaded manually from Panasonic’s support page. It can then be transferred onto a USB stick. It is also available via the built-in update function on DX900, perhaps all models.

FlatpanelsHD has not yet confirmed that the update works as intended but one reader, Trops, says that HLG works now on his 58” DX780 model.

- “Update available today 21st November 2017 from Panasonic site. My 58DX780 now has got HLG.”

It is not clear if HLG is supported via all input sources. To receive a HLG feed via HDMI, at least one of the TV’s ports must be updated to HDMI version 2.0b.

After the update, Panasonic’s 2016 TVs feature support for two HDR formats. Panasonic will later add support for HDR10+ on select 2017 TVs. HDR10+ is an alternative to Dolby Vision. However, HDR10+ is not coming to the 2016 models.

- Thanks for the tip, Trops
