Review: 'Alien' is coming to UHD Blu-ray in April

|

20th Century Fox is bringing Alien to UHD Blu-ray in April to celebrate the classic film’s 40th anniversary. The disc will include both a theatrical version and director’s cut.

Alien in 4K HDR

Ridley Scott’s original Alien was restored in 4K by 20th Century Fox and Company 3 / Deluxe Entertainment last year. Ridley Scott and Pam Dery supervised the restoration process.

The science fiction classic was released in 1979 so 2019 marks its 40th anniversary. The anniversary release will include both the 1979 theatrical version and the 2003 director’s cut, the studio confirmed. It will be presented in 4K resolution and HDR10 with a 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack for the director’s cut and a 4.1 soundtrack for the theatrical cut. It will also include extras such as deleted scenes.

- “In space no one can hear you scream. The terrifying sci-fi adventure, Alien, celebrates 40 years with an all-new 4K Ultra HD master, available April 23,” 20th Century Fox announced.

 Alien UHD Blu-ray

Alien was shot on 35mm film and by rescanning the original negative the studio can create a restored version in 4K resolution. Other classic movies such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Jurassic Park, and Forrest Gump have also been released on UHD Blu-ray.

An online release has yet to be confirmed but it is likely that Alien in 4K HDR is also coming to services such as iTunes and Vudu. The movie will be released in the US on April 23, 2019.
