Review: CES 2020: LG will unveil OLED TV concept that rolls down from ceiling

|

At CES 2020, LG Display will showcase its latest OLED TV concepts that are likely to reach consumer products in a year or three, including a "roll-down OLED". The company also confirms that 48-inch OLED is ready.

Roll-down OLED TV concept

Before LG Electronics (the consumer electronics company) unveiled its rollable OLED TV, LG Display (the display panel manufacturer) had been exhibiting it publicly as a concept for a year. Same story with 8K OLED. The two companies are separate entities but obviously collaborate in a number of areas. So when LG Display exhibits new stuff at CES, visitors take notice. The concepts often represent what is in the pipeline for potential future consumer products. At CES 2020, LG Display will be exhibiting a 65-inch "roll-down OLED" that can be "stored in the ceiling and can be pulled down when desired and rolled up when not in use". We actually asked LG Display about the possibility of flipping the rollable OLED panel on its head in 2018. Back then, the company told us that, yes, it is certainly possible from a technical standpoint. And now it will soon become reality, allowing consumers to install their TVs in the ceiling - much like a projector. - "The company will unveil a 65-inch UHD Roll-Down OLED display, an innovation which points to the future of home interior design. It is stored in the ceiling and can be pulled down when desired and rolled up when not in use. It is expected to raise the level of smart home interior by maximizing use of space," said LG Display. Here's LG Electronic's first generation (roll-up ?) rollable OLED TV for reference.

48-inch OLED is ready

In addition, LG Display confirms that the 48-inch OLED TV panel is ready. Until now, the smallest OLED TV has measured 55 inches diagonally. - "In addition, LG Display will add another size of OLED TV display to its lineup of 55-inch, 65-inch, 77-inch, and 88-inch OLED TV displays, expanding consumer options by unveiling a 48-inch OLED TV display for the first time in the world." What else? LG Display will also showcase a 77-inch wallpaper OLED concept with a "sound system made of films, which makes the display wafer-thin" as well as "an 88-inch 8K Cinematic Sound OLED display with a magnificent 11.2 channel sound system". Lastly, it will use CES 2020 to introduce new OLED concepts designed for automobiles and passenger airplanes. There are no publicly available pictures of the new roll-down or 48-inch OLED panels just yet - only the automotive and airplane solutions - but FlatpanelsHD will soon be checking them out at CES 2020 in Las Vegas.
