China's BOE has demonstrated a new OLED panel intended for phones, tablets and laptops that it claims offers improved color with 95% Rec.2020 coverage.
BOE is still not mass-producing OLED TV panels but in the segment for smaller OLED panels it is now a fierce competitor to Korea's LG Display and Samsung Display. Many Chinese smartphone brands are now using OLED displays from BOE.
The increased competition is good news for consumers, as OLED technology is entering tablets and laptops in earnest, after overtaking LCD in smartphones, and gaining share in TVs and monitors.
Even better color
One area where OLED is already well ahead of LCD is in color, with LG Display's WOLED slightly above 70% Rec.2020 color space coverage, Samsung Display's AMOLED at 70-80%, and Samsung Display's QD-OLED (TVs) close to 90% – and also delivering higher color volume.
The Rec.2020 color space covers significantly more colors visible to the human eye than the old Rec.709 HD-standard color space and the DCI-P3 cinema color space.
BOE now claims that its latest OLED panel exceeds 95% Rec.2020 coverage for even more accurate and lifelike color, while also reducing power consumption by 20%.

BOE explained that it is a tandem OLED panel that uses TADF-sensitized (Thermally activated delayed fluorescence) material to combine green superfluorescence and deep red phosphorescence (PHOLED). It appears to still use standard blue fluorescent material.

For smartphones, tablets, laptops
It was showcased at BOE's Innovation Partner Conference as a smartphone panel, but the company hopes to also use the new OLED technology in wearables, tablets and laptops to increase its competitive position against LG Display and Samsung Display.
At the conference, BOE also showcased other display innovations, including a 31.6-inch rollable OLED display and a 98-inch LCD panel destined for Hisense, to compete with TCL.
