For some years now Sony and Samsung has collaborated on LCD-TV panel production in their S-LCD joint venture. Afterwards Sony has assembled their TVs at manufacturing sites around the world but now Sony is outsourcing their LCD-TV production to Taiwan, according to the Asian news service Digitimes.
Sony outsources LCD-TV production
Starting later this year Sony is outsourcing their production of high-end TVs to two Taiwanese firms, respectively Foxconn Electronics – currently manufacturing some Apple products - and Wistron.
Sony is outsourcing the Sony Google TV production
It’s believed that Foxconn will manufacture and assemble Sony's coming borderless, ultra-thin TVs, that will be unveiled in the first half of 2011. Wistron is to produce Sony's new Google based TVs. And later in 2011, 70-80% of the flat panel TV production is to be outsourced.
This complies with Sony’s strategic restructuring of their TV business to make it profitable again. Sony has already sold some of the manufacturing facilities around the world and the next step is to outsource production of cheaper flat screen TVs.
Sony expects to sell 25 million LCD TVs on a global basis in their 2010 fiscal year, ending March 2011.
Sony is currently the third largest manufacturer of flat panel TV after Samsung and LG.
