We recently talked about CEA looking to standardize 3D glasses. Now Panasonic and Xpand are aiming to make M-3DI a new standard and several other companies have joined the proposal.
M-3DI - new standard for 3D glasses?
Consumers should be able to use the same 3D glasses on all TVs and recently manufacturers have started to take a open discussion about the issue.
Panasonic’s current 3D glasses
Panasonic and Xpand (maker of universal 3D glasses) are now proposing a standard called M-3DI and the aim is to make 3D glasses compatible for any TV, PC monitor and home projector.
The following companies support the new standard: Panasonic, Hitachi, Xpand, ViewSonic, Changhong FUNAI, Hisense, Mitsubishi, Seiko Epson and SIM2. That’s an impressive number on such short notice but we also notice that most major manufacturers including Samsung, LG, Philips, Sony, Sharp and Toshiba are missing from the list.
The M-3DI standard prescribes that manufacturers must use the infrared system to synchronize 3D glasses with the TV but also that might prove to be a problem as Samsung in 2011 moved on to Bluetooth.
With Panasonic’s M-3DI standard and the working group under CEA we are getting closer to one universal standard for 3D glasses, but until we a final announcement we remain skeptical.
