Britain’s oldest working TV goes up for auction

The oldest working TV in Britain, and possibly in the world, is up for auction. The 75-year old Marconiphone 702 is a 12-inch screen in a wood cabinet.

The oldest working TV

The Marconiphone 702 is believed to be the oldest working TV in Britain – or even the world.

The TV picture is generation inside the wooden box and then reflected on a mirror in the lid. This gives you a 12-inch screen in black and white.

The auction house says that only about 30 percent of the original parts have been replaced to make the TV functional - quite an achievement for a 75-old TV. See the video below for a demonstration.

The TV goes up for auction today, April 19th, at Bonhams in London with an estimated price of 5000 UK pounds, although it’s expected to sell for “much more”.
