Samsung has announced a breakthrough in LED technology allowing them to create a display on traditional glass windows. Samsung hopes to commercialize the technology in the future.

Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology has reported a breakthrough in light-emitting diode (LED) technology, which makes them able to integrate LEDs on ordinary glass.
In the future window panes can serve as lamps or even displays
The new technology enables Samsung to fabricate so-called single crystalline Gallium Nitride (GaN) onto glass substrates, enabling displays or lighting directly on windows or other glass objects.
- “In ten years, window panes will double as lighting and display screens, giving personality to buildings,” says a Samsung researcher.
LEDs today are available in 2-inches in size but the new GaN technology allows LEDs to become 400 times larger. Samsung also claims that the new LED technology will be utilized in future TVs and monitors with LCD panel, driving down costs of LEDs.
But while the new GaN LEDs can be utilized as backlight units in LCD panels, the most interesting aspect is the ability to turn window panes into lamps and ultimately displays (by utilizing many, small LEDs in different colors). Samsung believes that the window displays will be available in commercial products in approximately 10 years from now.
