UK-based Sky has just announced that it will launch a new internet TV service in the UK in the first half of 2012. The service will be available to anyone in the UK on a PC/Mac, laptop, tablet, smartphone, game console or connected TV.

Sky offers traditional TV channels in the UK but in the first half of 2012 Sky wants to expand their offerings with an internet-based TV service, to challenge Lovefilm and Netflix that recently entered the UK.

The service will offer Sky Movies on demand with “sports and entertainment” later on. Sky gives users the option to pay per episode or via a monthly unlimited subscription model. The current Sky GO service will continue.
The service will be available anywhere for users with an internet connection. Users can access the video content via browsers or apps for handheld devices.
Sky provides no further details at this point but says that the service will be online in the “first half of 2012” and that “more details of the new service will be revealed closer to launch”.
