Wow, a huge upheaval of the display industry is occurring right now. Just in the last few days, Samsung Display has begun operations, TPV has taken over control of Philips’ TVs, and now Japan Display – the Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi display merger – has initiated mass production. Japan Display will produce OLED panels from 2013.
The display industry is changing
Sony recently ended their LCD partnership with Samsung, and joined a display merger with Toshiba and Hitachi, dubbed Japan Display. As of April 1, Japan Display has initiated mass production of small-to-medium size LCD panels.

Japan Display will start producing OLED panels in 2013
In March 2013, Japan Display will take the first step into OLED panel production. The president of Japan Display, Shuichi Otsuka, said that Japan Display will be able to produce OLED panels with 300 ppi (pixels per inch), which is higher than the pixel density in OLED panels today, offered by Samsung. Samsung’s CEO of the OLED operations recently said that he feared competition in the OLED market from the Japanese manufacturers. Analysts also suggest that Japan Display will try to lure Apple into an OLED partnership.
- "We aim to become a global leading company born in Japan," Japan Display President Shuichi Otsuka said to Nikkei.
"We will make quick decisions with the flat organization."
Japan Display is dived into seven divisions and employs 6200 people. Japan Display already controls 20 % of the medium-size LCD market.
Each of the electronics companies own a 10 % stake in Japan Display, with the remaining stake owned by a Japanese government-funded company. Learn more about Japan Display here.
