Samsung and LG are the leading firms in the OLED technology and today marks the day where war between the two begins. Samsung has accused LG of stealing OLED technology and LG hits back, claiming that Samsung infringes on seven OLED patents. LG wants the judge to halt sales of Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones and tablets.
LG sues Samsung over OLED patents
Samsung had two OLED-TVs stolen at IFA. The Korean police has already arrested several persons in a case of OLED technology secrets and LG and Samsung are both blaming the Chinese for stealing OLED technology. Samsung has also accused LG of stealing their OLED technology.

LG hits back and has filed a suit against Samsung in the South Korean court. LG believes that Samsung infringes on seven OLED patents. One of the patents relates to technology that enables slim bezel OLEDs. The six other patents relate to other OLED related technologies.
LG has asked the judge to halt sales of Samsung’s smartphones and tablets that infringe, including Galaxy SIII, Galaxy SII, Galaxy SII HD, Galaxy Note and Galaxy Tab 7.7. LG asks for 7 billion won in damages - or around $6.25 million.
LG Display says:
- “This lawsuit has been filed both to enforce LG Display's intellectual property rights and promote fair competition. Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display must stop using the patents without permission”
This could be the start of a long and tiring battle between the two South Korean electronics giants. OLED technology is already considered the future of display technology. The global AMOLED market is estimated to be worth almost 80 billion USD.
