Sony recently unveiled its first 4K player. The small media box with a built-in hard drive has launched in USA for $699 USD (with ten 4K movies included). Sony has also officially announced its Video Unlimited 4K movie service.
Sony 4K player launches
Sony’s first 4K player – and one of the first 4K players - will be available in stores in just a few weeks, more precisely on July 15th and is already available to order online. However, the 4K player only works with Sony’s 4K TVs.
The 4K player has a built-in 2 TB hard drive to store 4K movies but can also take in videos from USB devices or SD cards.
FMP-X1 is Sony’s first 4K media player
Owners of Sony’s 84” 4K TV will receive the FMP-X1 player for free, and early buyers of the X9 TVs will be offered a $200 dollar discount on the $699 price. Orders can be placed through Amazon

Video Unlimited 4K opens this fall
Sony has also finally announced more details on its 4K movie service that has been rumored for some time. It will be called Video Unlimited 4K.
Through Video Unlimited 4K owners of the 4K player can rent movies for $7.99 (24-hour access) or buy movies for $29.99. Sony will also offer TV episodes and short videos in 3840x2160 – or 4K – resolution. With a 10 Mbit/s internet connection Sony estimates that it will take approximately 10 hours to download a 2-hour 4K movie. Sony has not provided details on what type of compression they will use.
Video Unlimited 4K is also said to become available on PlayStation 4.
